The Shepherd Window.

This window depicts Columbanus, a Celtic monk and missionary in Europe between 543 and 615 AD, standing firm in his beliefs as a man of God. The top section of the window shows Columbanus in prayer, whilst the lower section of the window depicts Columbanus standing firm in his beliefs about Christian marriage. He is seen here refusing to bless the offspring of Theodorie, King of Burgundy and Queen Brunehault, as the window tells us that they had failed to obey the laws of Christian marriage. So what was it that made Columbanus stand up against such intense pressure? Why did he hold so firmly to his beliefs? As Christians we believe that God’s laws are there for our own well-being, and Columbanus would have believed this also. Jesus himself said that all God’s laws were encapsulated within just two. Firstly to love God with all our heart, and with all our mind, and secondly to love our neighbour as ourselves.
