The Restoration.

“‘The glory of this latter house shall be greater than the former’ saith the Lord of hosts: ‘and in this place will I give you peace’.” Haggai 2: verse 9. At Saint Patrick’s we see the glory of that restoration which took place in the 1860’s. The Guinness family spent much time and money to restore this cathedral to the standards you see today.

However, there is something even more striking about this restoration that reminds us of Jesus himself. We read how the screen at the East End of the building was removed during the restoration in order to show the cruciform shape of the cathedral. In the Bible we read how the temple curtain was torn in two when Jesus died on the cross. Jesus removed that which separated Man from God on that Good Friday morning. But it wasn’t just the curtain that was removed. Before that day we were all separated from God by our sins. After that day we became as pure as freshly fallen snow before God, our sins had been taken away. There is now nothing that can separate us from the love of God. Saint Paul, in his letter to the Romans, states. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
