A Journey of Faith in Saint Patrick's Cathedral
The North Aisle Continued.
The Maunsell Window
This stained glass window depicts two specific scenes of faith from the Bible. The first, being the top picture, shows Jesus speaking to Martha as he approaches the home of Lazarus, Marthas brother, who has recently died. Martha knows who Jesus is. She tells him, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask. Jesus responds, "Your brother will rise again." Martha replies, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus then speaks the words on the window; "I am the resurrection and the life. He then says to Martha, He who believes in me will live, even though he dies and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" "Yes, Lord," she replies, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."
Martha believed Jesus was able to do what he said, and Jesus did not let her down. Later on we hear how Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. The second picture, in the lower section of the window, depicts Jesus appearing before the disciples after he has risen from death himself. Peace be unto you, he says as he appears in the room. You see, the disciples believed that Jesus was the Son of God, but at this time they were scared. Jesus appearance before them gave them courage to tell those around them that they had seen him. If it hadnt been for these men we might not be standing here in this cathedral today. Their faith to believe was great.
