The Ffiton brass.

The third and final brass dates from around 1579, and is dedicated to the memory of Sir Edward Ffiton and Lady Ffiton. Once again we see both Sir Edward and Lady Ffiton in an attitude of prayer reading from a scroll. However unlike the other two brasses we have looked at, this one is not dedicated to a Dean of this cathedral. Sir Edward Ffiton was in fact sent by Queen Elizabeth I on two occasions to serve her in the realm of Ireland. Although Sir Edward Ffiton was not ordained, he was still a man of faith who believed in prayer. For not only can we see him and his wife praying, but also their fifteen children. It would also be safe to assume that they longed for the day when Jesus would once more return to take those who believed in him, to be with him in Heaven. For written on the scroll are the words, “Even so, come quickly, come, Lord Jesus”. They are taken from the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, Chapter 22, verse 20. Saint John, after writing all that he has seen of the things to come, looks forward to the day when he will once again be with his Lord and Saviour in Heaven.
