The Brady Window.

This window dedicated to Mary Brady depicts Jesus as the Good Shepherd. In the top section of the window we can see Jesus holding a lamb, a single lamb, a lamb on its own. The Latin inscription below it reads “Ego sum Pastor Bonus” which when translated reads “I, I am the Good Shepherd”. Here is the tremendous message of hope, found in the Gospel according to Saint John Chapter 10. Jesus cares for individuals. He cares for each and every one of us, and most importantly he cares for you. Mary Brady’s brother, who commissioned this window, must have known that Jesus cared for his sister. He must have believed that Mary was as important to Jesus as she was to him. Mary was now safe in Jesus’ hands. He no longer had to worry. The inscription at the very bottom of the window confirms this understanding. “Those who are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with Him”

However his message of hope does not end there. For this window isn’t just a message of hope for individuals, it’s a message of hope for the Church as a whole, for the bottom section of the window depicts Jesus as a shepherd to the flock. The Latin inscription below reads “Fiet unum oville et unus Pastor” which when translated reads “and there shall be one flock and one shepherd”. Again this message can be found in Saint John’s Gospel Chapter 10. Here we see the hope of things to come, when the church of Christ will once again be united. Jesus will be the head of all the believers on that great day when He returns. He will be the one shepherd of the one flock. Division will be no more! What a wonderful vision this window gives us of Jesus, both now and in the future.
